According to the annual revenue report released by the Recording Industry Association of America, 79.5% of the US industry’s total revenue was generated by music streaming only.
To compare, at the beginning of the decade when music streaming began its slow and steady overtaking of the market, sharing only 7% of the entire US revenue, the end of 2019 saw a whopping 61 million subscriptions which translated to money is more than the entirety of the industry generated in 2017. Digital downloads and physical sales continued to falter in 2019, making up for 10% and 8% of the industry’s revenue respectively, with downloads decreasing by 18% in 2019, the first time digital download revenue has fallen below $1 billion USD since 2006.
